Toyota introduced a concept vehicle it bills as a "suitable sports car for the 21st century" at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show. The FT-HS (for "Future Toyota Hybrid Sport") is a front-engine, rear-drive sports car that combines power and fuel efficiency through the use of a 3.5-liter V6 engine coupled with an electric hybrid system. This powerteam is used in the current Lexus GS450h, where it makes 292 horsepower. Toyota aims for 400 horsepower in the FT-HS and a 0-60 mph time in the neighborhood of four seconds flat.
The angular body design has several unique features. The inside portion of the roof retracts into the rear seating area, turning the car from a four-seater to a two-seater. The hood has a scalloped channel that reveals the hybrid engine. The taillamp unit stretches across the full width of the car and has an integrated retractable spoiler. There is also a rear wing that is automatically activated at high speed to increase stability. Carbon fiber is used throughout, including the roof, rear diffuser, and wheels.
Inside, the car has a minimalist look. Features include a cross-car beam that holds an exposed passenger-side airbag, a hubless telescoping steering wheel, paddle shifters, and touch-trace sensors to activate the controls. At 170.27 inches long on a 104.33-inch wheelbase, the FT-HS is about the same size as a Nissan 350Z. Could this be the long-awaited replacement for the Toyota Supra? Maybe. It probably wouldn't be as radical or have as many unique features, but the hybrid powertrain would remain.

Toyota unveiled a larger version of its redesigned Tundra full-size pickup truck at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show. The CrewMax is a four-door, crew cab version of the Tundra. It will sell alongside two-door Regular Cab and four-door extended Double Cab models. CrewMax trucks have four full doors, and Toyota claims they have the most rear leg room of any other large pickup. SR5 and Limited trim levels will be available. The CrewMax's standard engine is a 271-horsepower, 4.7-liter V8. It teams with a five-speed automatic transmission. Optional is a 381-horsepower, 5.7-liter V8 that pairs with a six-speed automatic. When properly equipped, Tundra has a maximum towing capacity of 10,800 pounds.
Rear-wheel drive and four-wheel-drive CrewMax Tundras will be offered. The 4WD system has low-range gearing but should not be left engaged on dry pavement. All have standard antilock, four-wheel disc brakes, traction control, and an antiskid system. Front side airbags and curtain side airbags with rollover sensors are standard as well. Toyota didn't announce pricing, but officials said Regular and Double Cab Tundras will arrive at dealers in February. CrewMax models arrive in March.
