The Mitsubishi Prototype X Concept was revealed at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show. This sedan is a thinly disguised version of the company's next high-performance Lancer Evolution. Though it shares the same basic architecture as the 2008 Lancer sedan, that's essentially where the similarities end. Under the hood of the next "Evo" is turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Mitsubishi didn't announce horsepower figures, but officials said it will be the most powerful Lancer Evolution yet, meaning it should have more than the previous models' 286 horsepower. A five-speed manual transmission will be standard.

In a first for Mitsubishi, a sequential manual transmission (SMT) will be available. An SMT is essentially a manual transmission without a clutch pedal. Shifting is done manually via a floorshifter or steering wheel paddles, and it can be set to shift like an automatic. All-wheel drive will continue to be standard. Mitsubishi didn't announce pricing, but officials said it should arrive in dealers in early calendar 2008.
