On sale now with up to 306 horsepower, Lexus's rear-drive IS sedan gets a 400-horsepower V8 as part of the F treatment for 2008. According to plan, the midsize IS will be the first of several Lexus models to wear the F badge. Conceived to compete with the sporty AMG cars from Mercedes-Benz and the high-performance M cars from BMW, F-cars will enjoy significant power, handling, and styling enhancements over the conventional Lexus models on which they are based.
Power for the IS-F will come from a 5.0-liter V8 projected to produce at least 400 horsepower. Shifting is done via an 8-speed automatic transmission borrowed from the newly redesigned LS460, and includes manual-shift capability via steering-wheel-mounted paddles. Sharpening the IS-F's handling are 19-inch wheels and a sport-tuned suspension. Additional braking power comes courtesy of six-piston Brembo-brand brakes.
Lexus expects to have the F version of the IS in showrooms early in 2008. Pricing information is not yet available.

First shown at the 2005 Detroit Auto Show, the LF-A concept returns for 2007 as a vehicle described by Lexus as "much closer to a production vehicle." As part of the two-seat concept's update for 2007, front fenders are now adorned with the same Lexus F performance-division badge that marks the IS-F sedan.
Power for the front-engine, rear-drive concept comes from a V10 engine producing an estimated 500 horsepower. Power reaches the ground via an automatic transmission that can be shifted via steering wheel-mounted paddles.
In keeping with Lexus tradition, the LF-A interior is decidedly upscale in feel, including leather seating and vast expanses of polished wood on the dashboard and upper door panels. Slightly deviating from Lexus protocol is a digital instrument panel in place of the more traditional analog readouts.
Lexus says the LF-A's exterior styling is a product of the brand's new "L-Finesse" design theme, and is predictive of future products from the luxury maker. Described as a "fully engineered concept" the LF-A is a candidate for production. At this point Lexus claims to be "gauging public interest." Stay tuned.
